Ecological agriculture is a system for the production of foodstuffs based on a respect towards the environment, animal welfare and the maintenance and improvement of the soil. Agricultural practices are used that encourage the equilibrium of the ecosystem, avoiding or doing away with practically all artificial chemical products, such as fertilizers, pesticides, etc., instead using other techniques such as crop rotation and association, or using ‘green’ fertilizers, biological pest control and increasing biodiversity by using hedges or keeping vegetation within the plots of land where produce is grown.

This designation covers all primary produce, as well as the creation and transformation of foodstuffs, meaning that the possible presentations are all those normally used for any type of foodstuff.

In any case, all labels must be accompanied by the label of the Regulatory Board, referring to the ecological production method used. Once authorized by the Board, this label may be included on the product label itself.

Origin
The Galician Regulatory Board for Ecological Agriculture (Craega) controls production in all of the Autonomous Community of Galicia.

Characteristics
Ecological produce eligible to be included as part of this designation of origin is all untransformed plant and animal produce, or transformed plant and animal produce destined for use as human foodstuffs, and all foodstuffs, compound fertilizers and raw materials for use as animal feed.

As a result of being products obtained from agriculture without the use of artificial chemical products, and which are therefore absent in the foodstuffs themselves, these offer the very highest guarantees in terms of taste, nutritional content and sanitary levels, apart from maintaining their alimentary properties and condition for longer periods of time.
